Eyeliner FAQ
What is Permanent Eyeliner?
Eyeliner Tattoos can enhance the natural shape and color of the eyes, providing a smudge-proof and hassle-free solution for those who want to achieve a polished look. It involves the application of pigments, with a tattoo machine, along the lash line to create the appearance of defined and long-lasting eyeliner. Styles and thicknesses can be customizable, from a subtle and natural look to a more dramatic and bold effect with a wing. Results can Last 1-4 years depending on client skin and lifestyle.

Appointments are typically 2.5 – 3 hours depending on the artist. This includes a thorough in person consultation, before and after photos, desired eyeliner shaping, the tattoo procedure, and instructions on how to care for your eyeliner after the appointment.
For the lash line enhancement, we do not map the shape, we simply follow the natural thickness of the client’s lash line where the lashes grow. For a winged eyeliner, we will map out the wing beforehand and can make it look as natural or dramatic as the client requests. We recommend always going with a more natural look that will age well over time.
The pain levels can vary from person to person. Some individuals may find it uncomfortable, while others may experience only minimal discomfort. During the procedure, a topical numbing cream is typically applied to the eyelids to help minimize any pain or discomfort. However, a mild sensation of the tattoo needle may still be felt as it deposits pigment along the lash line. If you’re concerned about pain during a permanent eyeliner procedure, you can discuss your options for pain management with your PMU artist beforehand, such as using additional numbing agents.
Overall, while some discomfort may be experienced during the procedure, many individuals find that the results are well worth any temporary discomfort, as permanent eyeliner can save time and effort in daily makeup application.
Our technique involves a special method of stretching your eyelid so that your eyes are closed throughout the procedure. The ink is safe for the eyes and can be rinsed out with a saline eye rinse solution that is used at the end of the procedure.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It’s generally not recommended to undergo cosmetic tattooing procedures, eyeliner, while pregnant or breastfeeding. The effects of the pigments on the fetus or infant are not well-studied, and there may be potential risks involved.
People with certain medical conditions and/or eye conditions: Such as autoimmune disorders, diabetes, bleeding disorders, or skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, may have an increased risk of complications from permanent eyeliner procedures. Certain eye conditions, such as chronic dry eye, glaucoma, or recent eye surgery, may need to avoid permanent eyeliner services. It’s essential to discuss your medical history with a healthcare provider before undergoing any permanent makeup procedure.
*Anyone under the age of 18 years old are not permitted to receive any PMU services.

Permanent eyeliner healing can vary from person to person, but generally, it takes about 7-14 days for the initial healing process. The color of the eyeliner may appear darker immediately after the procedure and then lighten as the skin heals. It’s normal for the color to settle and soften over the first few weeks. The full healing process typically takes about 4 to 6 weeks.
Right after your appointment, the treated area may appear swollen, red, and tender. Some individuals may experience minor bruising or bleeding at the site of the tattoo. This is normal and typically subsides within 24-48 hours. It’s essential to keep the treated area clean and dry to prevent infection. You may also experience some discomfort or itching as the skin begins to heal. You may notice scabbing or flaking of the skin around the tattooed area. It’s important to avoid picking or scratching at the scabs, as this can disrupt the healing process and affect the final result. Your PMU artist will provide you with aftercare instructions, including applying a healing ointment or cream to the eyelids. Be sure to follow all of the aftercare instructions provided after your appointment for optimal results. See aftercare instructions here:
We offer a complimentary touch up between 6–10 weeks from your initial appointment to perfect the shape and color. After that, it is recommended to return for color boosts/maintenance touch-ups as needed. If you are unsure if you need a touchup, please feel free to send us a photo. Most clients return for eyeliner touch ups within 2-3 years.
While permanent eyeliner is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and experienced technician, there are potential side effects and risks associated with the procedure. These may include:
Swelling and Tenderness: It’s common for the eyes to swell slightly after the procedure. Your eyes may feel tender or sore for a few days following the procedure. This discomfort can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. This usually subsides within a few days.
Allergic reactions: While rare, allergic reactions to the pigments or numbing agents used during the procedure are possible. Be sure to inform your PMU artist of any known allergies beforehand.
Color changes: The color of the permanent eyeliner may fade or change over time due to factors such as sun exposure, aging, and the natural regeneration of the skin. Touch-up sessions may be needed periodically to maintain the desired color and intensity.
Eye irritation: Some individuals may experience temporary irritation or discomfort in the eyes following the procedure. This may include symptoms such as dryness, redness, or watering of the eyes. These symptoms typically resolve on their own within a few days.
Following the aftercare instructions provided by your PMU artist is crucial to your healing process and this will give you the optimal results of your Permanent eyeliner.
During the consultation, the artist will assess your skin type, discuss your desired outcome, and explain the procedure, including potential risks and aftercare. This is also a good time to ask any questions or show any reference photos you may have.
Styles and thicknesses can be customizable, from a subtle and natural look to a more dramatic and bold effect with a wing. We only offer black as the color for all eyeliner services. Options can be discussed during your consultation with your PMU artist. You can communicate your preferences for the style you are interested in, and we can provide recommendations based on our expertise and experience.
This can happen if the artist uses body tattoo pigment and implants the color too deeply into the skin. We use the highest quality permanent makeup pigments which have evolved over time and are pre-modified to heal true black. We also do not work as deeply into the skin so the pigment will not migrate over time.
Yes, permanent eyeliner can be removed, but the process can be more challenging than its application. There are several methods for removing permanent eyeliner, although none are as straightforward as the application process itself. Laser removal would be the best recommendation for the eye area, which would have to be done by a medical professional.
